Tantangan dalam menghadapi perubahan iklim mendorong manusia untuk terus selalu melakukan inovasi teknologi untuk dapat menjaga keberlangsungan hidup manusia sekaligus melestarikan ekosistem bumi dengan penggunaan energi yang ramah lingkungan.
Institut Teknologi PLN berupaya membentuk individu yang dapat berkontribusi dalam inovasi dan energi secara perlahan telah membuahkan hasil yang dapat terlihat oleh masyarakat. berkat ide dan inovasi kreatif Mahasiswa Fakultas Ketenagalistrikan dan Energi Terbarukan, nama ITPLN mencuat sebagai kampus yang memiliki kelebihan dalam bidang energi terbarukan.
Mahasiswa tersebu adalah Evan Wicaksono, Muhammad Raafi Aqil F dan Ridwan Nur, mahasiswa Teknik Elektro yang membawa inovasi mereka dengan judul ” DESALINASI AIR LAUT MENGGUNAKAN ENERGI SURYA BERBASIS IOT SEBAGAI ALTERNATIF PENYEDIAAN AIR BERSIH” dalam sebuah kegiatan yang diselenggarakan oleh Dewan Energi Mahasiswa Semarang dengan nama kegiatan Lex Energi 2023.
Dalam perlombaan tersebut, Tim Mahasiswa ITPLN ini meraih Juara Pertama sebagai Inovasi terbaik. Latar belakang pembuatan inovasi ini berasal dari keprihatinan mereka akan masyarakat di wilayah pesisir yang jauh dari mata air, masih banyak masyarakat yang belum mendapatkan fasilitas air bersih. dan sistem destilasi yang mereka buat bertujuan untuk menghasilkan air tawar yang berasal dari air laut, sistem ini memenangkan kejuaraan dengan memiliki kelebihan dalam penggunaan Internet of Things serta pemanfaatan sel surya untuk menghasilkan listrik yang bertujuan untuk menggerakan mesin mesin dalam proses destilasi tersebut.
